Execration

I tugged the beanie over my ears and blinked away the snowflakes on my eyelashes. Humans passed by as if I was one of them. People came and went from the building, pushing and pulling the door as they entered or exited the college.

Here I stood, reminiscing of the events that all led up to this moment.

I tried to deny the truth, but I couldn’t any longer. I had to face the facts, or I would drive myself crazy trying to believe it wasn’t so.

I was in love with Ayden Dyer.

We could never control who we fell in love with and I never knew it to be so true until it happened to me.

When he and Sunny would laugh while kissing one another, my heart stung. It was wrong for me to act upon it, but it didn’t change that I had feelings for him.

Days passed since I last spoke to Ayden. We would have passing words, but nothing went further than a minute of talking. It

was a constant war with me, Heaven, and Sunny.

I was not supposed to be the type of woman who continued to be involved with a man who was taken, and yet I was still his guardian angel. I couldn’t just cut him out of my life if I wanted to save his soul. It didn’t lessen how morally wrong it was to hang around Ayden so much when he was with another woman while knowing I loved him in a romantic kind of way

At night, I would imagine his green eyes lost in my own. They would be filled with nothing but joy and admiration. There was no hatred or resentment.

When his lips met with hers, I would switch places with her in my mind. I imagined him kissing me instead.

I knew better. When the day ended, it was always Sunny. It would never be me.

Sunny was the beautiful woman who captured Ayden’s interest enough to keep him around for more than sex. I never knew Ayden had a thing for redheads, but I wasn’t surprised. Redheads could be amazing people aside from the stunning shades of ginger hair.

When Ayden got in a car crash, I was there. When Ayden ended up drunk, I was present to take him home. When Ayden had issues with his family, I was the one to bring them together and fix it. I was always the one who stood by and aided him to better himself. I helped him realize his talent for baking and it was me, the only woman getting inside his head and who always encouraged him to be himself.

Sunny was never there when he almost died. She wasn’t there when Ayden was too impaired to drive himself. She was never there for Ayden the way I was, but he chose her. I knew why.

Sunny was alive. Sunny was a fresh start.

I was the person who hid everything from him. I never told him my name. I tried to keep secrets out of his reach. I wasn’t even human anymore.
